The United Kingdom’s new pre-travel entry system, Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), is part of the UK’s move toward a more streamlined and secure digital immigration system.
When ETA is required
Starting February 25, 2026, certain travelers must have an approved ETA before traveling to the UK.
Who needs an ETA
- Visa-exempt travelers visiting the UK for short stays (up to six months)
- Travelers who do not hold UK immigration status or a visa
- Some transit passengers, depending on whether they pass through UK passport control during their layover
- British and Irish citizens do not need an ETA
What to know
- An ETA is a digital authorization to travel, not a visa
- ETA holders must travel with the same passport used for the application
- Valid for multiple trips over two years or until the traveler’s passport expires (whichever comes first)
- Travelers without an ETA will not be permitted to board transportation bound for the UK
How to apply
- Apply via the UK ETA mobile app or online
- Applications are typically approved within minutes; allow at least three working days for processing time
- Current fee: £16 (subject to increase to £20 in the future)
U-M Expense Guidance
ETA application fees, like passport application fees, are not reimbursable as a U-M business expense, since the authorization can also be used for personal travel.
