ETIAS launch delayed until late 2026

Jun 10, 2026 | News

The European Union has delayed the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which is now expected to begin in Q4 2026.

Once implemented, ETIAS will be required for U.S. passport holders and other visa-exempt travelers visiting participating European and Schengen-area countries for short-term stays. ETIAS is not a visa; it is a mandatory pre-travel authorization, similar to the ESTA program used by travelers entering the United States.

When ETIAS becomes active, travelers will need to apply online through the official ETIAS website or mobile app before departure. The fee will be €20 (approximately $24 USD), and approvals will generally be valid for up to three years or until the traveler’s passport expires, whichever comes first. Most applications are expected to be processed within minutes, though some may require additional review.

For U-M travelers, the ETIAS application fee will not be reimbursable as a business expense, similar to passport application fees, since the authorization may also be used for personal travel.

While ETIAS will not be required until late 2026, travelers planning future trips to Europe should stay informed and plan ahead as additional details and official launch dates are announced.
