Boxcar Studio is a full-service, web shop with a long history with the University of Michigan. Our work spans from individual labs and initiatives to major schools and units within U-M. We specialize in sensible solutions for educational institutions and nonprofits. Our services include research and strategy, information architecture, design, development, training, consulting, hosting and accessibility.

Boxcar Studio was founded in 2005 by its present owners, Lani Chisnell and T.J. Smith. Lani and T.J.’s background, passion, and deep understanding of non-profit organizations shaped the company’s focus. Since 2005, Boxcar has served over 300 clients ranging from large corporations to major cultural institutions right here in Michigan and beyond including the University of Michigan, Arizona State University, Notre Dame University, the University of Pennsylvania, the State of California, the Church of Christian Science, the Michigan Theater, Leelanau Wine Cellars, Oakland Schools, Monroe County Library System, Ypsilanti District Library and the YMCAs of Flint and Ann Arbor.

A small, nimble team, Boxcar seeks to develop relationships with our clients. We strive to be a true partner. To that end, clients work directly with the individuals working on their project. This portal is designed to help customers request quotes from multiple suppliers, select a supplier for each project, record data for later use, communicate via a message board specific to your project, and retrieve historical information on your projects. A U-M ID and a Kerberos password are needed to get started.

The owners function as project managers while also participating in specific deliverables of the project, with Lani leading design and T.J. leading production. The rest of the team works together, primarily on development, to build out the sites, program features, functionality and integration and supply training.
