Topic: Exclusive Pouring Rights

What are “pouring rights?”

Pouring rights refer to an exclusive agreement between an organization and a beverage company, granting that company the sole right to sell, serve, and advertise its products at designated locations, such as university dining facilities, hospitals, events, and vending operations at U-M.

What beverage companies were considered for the agreement?

The U-M Pouring Rights Evaluation Committee assessed bids from Coca-Cola, Keurig Dr. Pepper, PepsiCo, and Red Bull.

How was the decision to choose Coca-Cola made?

The university established a pouring rights evaluation committee composed of representatives from each U-M campus and Michigan Medicine. The committee reviewed beverage supplier proposals to identify the best overall value for U-M. In addition, more than 3,000 students, employees, and retirees completed an online survey or attended a virtual town hall about pouring rights.

Who was on the evaluation committee?

The evaluation committee comprised representatives from the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses: Athletics, Dining, Michigan Medicine, Procurement Services, Student Life, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Office of the Provost, and Office of Campus Sustainability. The Law School, Medical School, Ross School of Business, and School for Environment and Sustainability were also represented, ensuring a broad perspective and consideration of the diverse needs of the university community.

How does the pouring rights agreement benefit U-M?

The agreement will offer value across U-M in several ways, including direct sponsorship funding, student scholarships, internships, and ambassadorships, support for sustainability initiatives and nutrition programs, enhanced customer service, streamlined beverage operations, and updated equipment.

How long will the pouring rights agreement be?

The length of the initial term of the agreement is expected to be 10 years.

What type of arrangement does U-M currently have for beverage service?

Currently, U-M works with a variety of beverage suppliers under multiple contracts and agreements, without a university-wide exclusive pouring rights arrangement.
