The contract under which U-M offers discounted car rental services to the university community expired on July 31, 2023, and is being renegotiated with an expectation that a new agreement will be in place on September 1, 2023.
As a result—and due in large part to inflation and other factors impacting the travel industry—rental rates at both National Car Rental and Enterprise Rent-A-Car increased on August 1. The rates for any reservations made before August 1 will be honored at the rates established under the expired contract*. Any reservations made on or after August 1 will be billed at the new rates. The new rates—that went into effect on August 1—will be maintained under the new contract once it’s finalized.
There may, however, be other modifications to the agreement. U-M is a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA), which is negotiating the purchasing agreement with Enterprise Holdings, the parent company of National and Enterprise. Moving forward, we’ll continue to provide updates on the new car rental contract.
*Update: As of Sept 1, National/Enterprise states that renters should expect to be charged the new rates no matter when the reservation was booked. Some locations at their discretion may choose to honor the old rate.
